How to appeal an App Store rejection

Quick answer: To appeal an App Store rejection, first reply in App Store Connect if the reviewer misunderstood something. If you still believe the decision is wrong, submit an appeal to the App Review Board through Apple's appeal form. Be specific, calm and brief, and point to the exact guideline text and screens.

How to write the appeal

  1. One line on what the app does.
  2. The guideline cited and why you believe you comply, quoting the text.
  3. Where to see it: screens, steps, a short video.
  4. What you've already changed. Keep it under a page. Don't mention other apps that were approved.

App Store rejection appeal: key rules and context

Reply or appeal? Reply in App Store Connect when the reviewer missed something (demo account, feature location). Appeal when you've explained and still disagree with the interpretation. You can also request a call with App Review (Apple: Contact App Review).

Appealing on Google Play. From Play Console > Policy status, choose the issue and appeal. Include evidence and explain the use case. See Google Play rejection fixes.

When not to appeal. If the rule clearly applies, fixing is faster than appealing. Check the matching guide in the rejection hub.

Worked example (hypothetical)

This example is illustrative. The app is made up, and so are any numbers in it.

Imagine ClinicQ is rejected under 4.2 as a website wrapper, but it has native booking and reminders. We'd reply with a screen recording of those features first, then appeal only if the reviewer still disagrees.

Common mistakes

  • Appealing before replying. Slower.
  • Emotional language. Unhelpful.
  • No evidence. Weak case.
  • Stopping work. Have a plan B.

How to appeal, step by step

Follow these steps in order. Each one is something we do on client work.

  1. Reply first. Many issues are resolved in Resolution Center.
  2. Decide if appeal is right. Only if you believe the reviewer misread the app or guideline.
  3. Gather evidence. Screens, recordings, guideline text.
  4. Write a short appeal. Facts, guideline numbers, where to look.
  5. Submit through Apple's appeal form. From the App Review contact page.
  6. Keep working on a fix. In parallel.
