How scaling works
If you provide the 6.9-inch set, App Store Connect can use it for smaller iPhones. You can still upload device-specific sets if your layout looks different on smaller screens. iPad is separate: iPad screenshot guide.
Format rules
- JPEG or PNG, RGB, no transparency.
- 1 to 10 screenshots per display size and localization.
- The first 1–3 show in search results, so put your strongest message first.
Previews and Google Play
App previews have their own specs: app preview video size. Android sizes are in the Google Play screenshot size guide. Use the screenshot size reference tool to check a file.
How to export screenshots at the right size
Follow these steps in order. Each one is something we do on client work.
- Decide your device list. Most iPhone apps need the 6.9-inch set; add 13-inch iPad if the app runs on iPad.
- Design at the largest size. Start at 1320 × 2868 px so smaller sizes downscale cleanly.
- Keep text inside safe margins. Leave room at the top and bottom so captions don't crowd the edges.
- Export as PNG or JPEG. App Store Connect accepts.jpeg,.jpg or.png.
- Check counts. 1–10 per device size on the App Store; 2–8 per device type on Google Play.
- Upload and preview. Check how the first three appear in search results on a real phone.
Worked example (hypothetical)
This example is illustrative. The app is made up, and so are any numbers in it.
Say BudgetBee designs screenshots at 1290 × 2796 px in Figma. That's an accepted 6.9-inch size, so the upload works. If the team also supports iPad, they need a separate 13-inch set at 2064 × 2752 px. Stretching iPhone art won't work, because the aspect ratio is different. We'd rebuild the layout for iPad with two-column screens, not just bigger phones.
Screenshot specs we design to
Both stores publish exact requirements. These are the ones that matter most for a phone-first app.
| Store / device | Size or rule | Count |
|---|---|---|
| App Store, iPhone 6.9-inch | 1320 × 2868, 1290 × 2796 or 1260 × 2736 px (portrait) | 1–10 per device size |
| App Store, iPad 13-inch | 2064 × 2752 or 2048 × 2732 px (portrait) | 1–10 per device size |
| App Store, format | .jpeg,.jpg or.png | — |
| Google Play, phone | JPEG or 24-bit PNG, 320–3,840 px, long side no more than 2× the short side | Minimum 2 to publish, up to 8 per device type |
| Google Play, Chromebook / tablet | 1,080–7,680 px, 16:9 or 9:16 | Minimum 4 recommended |
How we measure the result
Screenshots mostly affect conversion: the share of people who see your page or search result and then install. In App Store Connect, App Analytics reports product page views and conversion rate; product page optimization tests report estimated lift for each treatment. In Play Console, store listing experiments compare your variants with the current listing. We change one thing at a time, record the date, and wait for the console to show a confident result before calling a winner. A good-looking set that doesn't lift conversion is still a set worth replacing.
Common mistakes
- Uploading one size for iPad and iPhone. Different aspect ratios.
- Transparent PNGs for Google Play. Play wants 24-bit PNG with no alpha.
- Tiny captions. They're unreadable in search results.
- Too-long Play screenshots. The long side can't be more than twice the short side.
