How to make App Store screenshots with the generator
Follow these steps in order. Each one is something we do on client work.
- Pick the device size. Start with the 6.9-inch iPhone size; the tool exports at an accepted resolution.
- Upload a real capture. Use a screenshot from your current build, so it passes guideline 2.3.3.
- Write a caption of five words or fewer. Lead with the outcome.
- Choose a background colour. High contrast with the caption.
- Export and check. Open the file and confirm the pixel size.
- Repeat for the first three screens. These carry most of the decision.
Worked example (hypothetical)
This example is illustrative. The app is made up, and so are any numbers in it.
Say TaskTide uploads its Today screen and writes "Plan your day in 2 minutes". We'd shorten it to "Plan your day fast" so it's legible in search, then make screen two "Never miss a deadline" over the reminders view.
Screenshot specs we design to
Both stores publish exact requirements. These are the ones that matter most for a phone-first app.
| Store / device | Size or rule | Count |
|---|---|---|
| App Store, iPhone 6.9-inch | 1320 × 2868, 1290 × 2796 or 1260 × 2736 px (portrait) | 1–10 per device size |
| App Store, iPad 13-inch | 2064 × 2752 or 2048 × 2732 px (portrait) | 1–10 per device size |
| App Store, format | .jpeg,.jpg or.png | — |
| Google Play, phone | JPEG or 24-bit PNG, 320–3,840 px, long side no more than 2× the short side | Minimum 2 to publish, up to 8 per device type |
| Google Play, Chromebook / tablet | 1,080–7,680 px, 16:9 or 9:16 | Minimum 4 recommended |
How we measure the result
A tool gets you a correct file or a quick check; it doesn't tell you whether the result converts. After you upload, watch conversion in App Analytics or Play Console, and use product page optimization or store listing experiments to compare versions. Re-run the tool whenever Apple or Google updates their specs, which they do when new devices ship. We re-check the official spec pages each time we update these tools.
Common mistakes
- Captions that describe the UI. Describe the benefit.
- Fake screens. Must show the app in use.
- Inconsistent backgrounds. The set should look like one story.
- Exporting the wrong size. Check pixels before upload.
