How to improve your Google Play ranking
Follow these steps in order. Each one is something we do on client work.
- Fix relevance first. Title, short and full description must clearly describe what the app does.
- Fix quality signals. Crash rate and ANR rate in Android vitals; fix the worst issues.
- Improve conversion. Better icon, screenshots and feature graphic.
- Ask for reviews in context. Use the In-App Review API after a success moment.
- Ship regular updates. Keep the app current with Android versions.
- Track by keyword. Use Play Console acquisition reports.
Key rules and context
Relevance. Visible text is indexed: Google Play ASO.
Quality. Bad vitals can lower visibility (Android vitals); ratings and reviews also count (Play ratings).
Charts. Google Play top charts work differently from search.
Tracking. Play Console acquisition reports show search vs explore traffic.
Worked example (hypothetical)
This example is illustrative. The app is made up, and so are any numbers in it.
Suppose QuickScan, a document scanner, has a high crash rate on older devices. Fixing that and asking for reviews after a successful scan helps both quality and ratings, while a clearer title ("QuickScan: PDF Scanner") helps relevance.
Common mistakes
- Only changing keywords. Quality counts too.
- Asking for reviews at launch. Users haven't seen value.
- Ignoring Android vitals. Fix crashes.
- Fake reviews. Against policy.
On Google Play there is no hidden keyword field, so the title, short description and full description do all the keyword work. We write them for people first, keep the main term natural in each, and avoid repeating it just to raise density.
If you want this handled for you, our pricing page lists every fixed package.
Google Play listing fields and their limits
Play Console enforces these limits for every language, full-width or half-width characters alike.
| Field | Limit | Policy notes |
|---|---|---|
| App name | 30 characters | No emojis, ALL CAPS (unless brand) or store-ranking claims |
| Short description | 80 characters | First text users see on the detail page |
| Full description | 4,000 characters | Repetitive or irrelevant keywords can lead to suspension |
| App icon | 512 × 512 px, 32-bit PNG, max 1,024 KB | No badges or text implying ranking |
| Feature graphic | 1,024 × 500 px, JPEG or 24-bit PNG | No alpha |
How we measure the result
Here is how we judge whether Google Play ranking work is paying off. App Analytics in App Store Connect breaks impressions and product page views down by source, and App Store Search is one of those sources. When impressions climb but installs stay flat, the bottleneck is conversion, so the icon and screenshots come next rather than more keywords.
