How to work toward top charts
Follow these steps in order. Each one is something we do on client work.
- Know how charts work. Google doesn't publish the formula; treat charts as an outcome, not a target.
- Pick the right category. Your category decides which chart you appear in.
- Improve quality. Android vitals: crashes and ANRs.
- Improve conversion. Icon, screenshots, feature graphic.
- Time updates and launches. Concentrate promotion around a launch.
- Track daily ranks with care. Trends matter more than single days.
Google Play top charts: key rules and context
Chart types. Top free, Top grossing, Top paid, plus per-category and per-device charts.
What drives them. Recent installs and revenue; Google doesn't publish the formula.
Search vs charts. Search uses relevance plus quality: Google Play ranking.
Getting there. Launch pushes, featuring, strong conversion (experiments).
Worked example (hypothetical)
This example is illustrative. The app is made up, and so are any numbers in it.
Say BeatBox Kids sits in Music but fits Education better. Moving categories changes which chart it competes in. We'd review both categories' top apps before deciding.
What you can and can't control
| Factor | Control |
|---|---|
| Category | Yes |
| Listing quality | Yes |
| App stability | Yes |
| Competitors' installs | No |
Common mistakes
- Chasing charts with fake installs. Policy risk.
- Wrong category. Wrong competition.
- Ignoring vitals. Quality matters.
- Daily panic. Watch trends.
Charts reward recent install volume within a category and country, so a short campaign can lift you briefly while organic search keeps you there. We focus first on the listing and search terms, then time any launch push around a real update.

How we measure the result
Here is how we judge whether Google Play top charts work is paying off. App Analytics in App Store Connect breaks impressions and product page views down by source, and App Store Search is one of those sources. When nothing moves at all, the chosen terms were likely too competitive or not relevant enough, and we return to keyword research.
