How to make an icon that works on iPad
Follow these steps in order. Each one is something we do on client work.
- Use the same 1024 px master. One icon works across Apple devices.
- Check larger rendering. iPad shows icons bigger in some places; fine flaws show.
- Check the dock and Spotlight. Different sizes and backgrounds.
- Keep a strong silhouette. Recognisable at any size.
- Check dark and tinted appearances. Same as iPhone.
- Test with real wallpapers. iPad wallpapers are often busy.
iPad app icon design: key rules and context
Specs
1024 x 1024 px, PNG, no alpha; single-size asset in Xcode covers iPad (Apple HIG).
Design checks. Thin lines and gradients look different large. Check the dock size and widgets alongside your icon.
Dark and tinted. Same as iPhone: provide variants (iOS icon design).
Screenshots. iPad also needs its own screenshots: iPad screenshots.
Worked example (hypothetical)
This example is illustrative. The app is made up, and so are any numbers in it.
Say NoteGrid has a soft gradient that looks fine on iPhone but shows banding on a large iPad home screen. We'd re-export from vector with dithering or flatten the gradient.
Where iPad shows your icon
| Place | What to check |
|---|---|
| Home screen | Silhouette, banding |
| Dock | Contrast on blur |
| Spotlight / search | Small-size legibility |
| Settings | Tiny size |
Common mistakes
- Low-res masters. Blurry on iPad.
- Gradient banding. Visible at large sizes.
- Thin outlines. Vanish on busy wallpapers.
- Separate iPad icon. Usually unnecessary.
iPad apps use the same 1024 x 1024 px master as iPhone, and the system scales it for home screen, Spotlight and settings. We check the icon at small sizes on a real iPad, because detail that looks fine on a large artboard often disappears.
If you want this handled for you, our pricing page lists every fixed package.
Icon specs for both stores
Design once at high resolution, then export to each store's rules.
| Store | Size | Rules |
|---|---|---|
| App Store | 1024 × 1024 px master | Layered icon; the system applies the mask, so don't bake in rounded corners |
| Google Play | 512 × 512 px | 32-bit PNG with alpha, max 1,024 KB |
| Google Play policy | — | No badges, ranking text or misleading symbols (e.g. fake notification dots) |
| App Store policy (2.3.8) | — | Icons must suit a 4+ audience even if the app is rated higher |
How we measure the result
For iPad app icon design, we treat the icon as a conversion asset first. On iOS, product page optimization can test alternate icons that are included in the app binary. We pick icons on conversion data from those tests, not on team votes.
Apple's App icons guidance describes one icon design adapted across platforms and appearances, so most iPad work is checking, not redrawing.
